Residents of Mugina sector in Kamonyi District are celebrating a new chapter after years of unsafe and illegal mining. Families who once lived in fear of mine accidents and environmental destruction now express relief since the government granted Rwanda Trinity Minerals permission to carry out legal and regulated mining in the area.
Before the company’s arrival, Mugina was plagued by illegal mining that caused frequent accidents, injuries, and deaths. The environment was damaged, and the government lost tax revenues from minerals that were smuggled out.
Herena Mukashyanka, a mother from Nteko cell, recalls the tragedy of losing her husband in an illegal mining collapse. “He went to dig minerals at night and never returned. In the morning, they found him dead in the pit,” she said. Today, she finds comfort in the arrival of Rwanda Trinity Minerals, which not only ended unsafe mining but also gave her employment to support her children.
At least 20 former illegal miners have now been employed by Rwanda Trinity Minerals as legal workers. Among them is Moise Nsengiyera, who recalls the dangers of his past life: “We used to dig in secret, constantly risking our lives. Today we work safely, with proper equipment and guidance.”
Another miner, Enock Mujejimana, shares a similar transformation: “I used to sell coltan illegally. When Rwanda Trinity arrived, they offered us jobs and encouraged us to save. With my earnings, I have managed to build a house, something I never thought possible.”
Workers highlight the difference: instead of spending daily wages recklessly, they now receive salaries through bank accounts, enabling savings and long-term benefits. Many say what once felt like a dangerous struggle for survival has become a source of dignity and stability.
Company representative Emile Kanyamahanga explained that Rwanda Trinity Minerals prioritizes eliminating illegal mining and building modern facilities. “We are guided by Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB) to ensure our operations uplift communities, not exploit them,” he said.
Local leaders also praise the company. Mugina sector executive secretary Epimaque Munyakazi noted: “Illegal mining claimed lives, damaged the environment, and deprived the government of taxes. Rwanda Trinity Minerals is a true partner in development.”
Rwanda Trinity Minerals uses advanced equipment such as excavators and specialized trucks to transport ore. The company is constructing a modern processing plant that will separate minerals from sand, promising even greater community benefits once operational.
For residents of Mugina, Rwanda Trinity Minerals has transformed their lives. What was once a place of fear and loss is now a community of hope, safety, and opportunity.
